Life in the Round
|
2013 EVENTS
You are warmly invited to the following 'Life in the Round' events, taking place in 2013. Through these events we aim to provide a setting in which sceptics, agnostics, and believers can examine and explore Christian belief, its implications and its alternatives in the 21st century. Our goal is to give people the chance to reflect on the ‘big picture’ questions of life in a context which allows for robust, honest, critical and courteous discussion.
Unless otherwise stated, each event takes place on a Thursday, 5.45 - 7.00pm, at the Round Church, Bridge Street, Cambridge. Doors open at 5.15pm for light refreshments with the talk starting at 5.45 sharp. After the talk (approximately 45 minutes in length) there will be time for questions and discussion. |

'THE HISTORICAL EMERGENCE OF ISLAM'
THURSDAY 23RD MAY
THE ROUND CHURCH
JAY SMITH
In the last year new books Have emerged (i.e. Tom Holland's 'In the Shadow of the Sword') which question whether Islam as we know it, really began in the 7th century, as Islam tells us, or whether the Muhammad of the Islamic traditions is the same as the Muhammad of history? Jay Smith, who has been debating similar historical problems for around 17 years will take this newer material and introduce it, and then try to make sense of it.
Jay Smith is a Christian apologist, who speaks weekly at Speaker's Corner on similar historical material, is finishing his PhD in Christian apologetics to Islam, and teaches Christian apologetics and polemics in different venues around the world.
